Woodpeckers have one of the most recognizable sounds and looks of any bird, and are often seen visiting peanut or suet feeders. To help attract these dramatic birds to your yard, you may wish to add a woodpecker or flicker house to your birding sanctuary. Hole sizes range from 1.5" in diameter for downy woodpeckers, to 2.5" for larger varieties such as pileated woodpeckers and northern flickers. Post mounting the home 5' to 15' high on a tree, wall, or post will easily attract these cavity nesters. Be sure to face the entrance hole toward direct sunlight, as these birds tend to enjoy forest edges with plenty of light.
