As a colony bird which prefers to roost near humans, martin houses are most successful when pole mounted 10' to 20' high, in an open area at least 30' from human housing. Lighter colored homes attract the birds best, and are excellent at keeping nestlings cool in the summer. The minimum suggested compartment size is 6" x 6" x 6", while larger ones offer better protection from predators. Entry holes sized 1.75" to 2.25" in diameter allow the martins passage and attract them best.
