One way to keep squirrels from pilfering your seed is to offer them their own food source and feeder. This helps distract them from your birding efforts, and allows you hours of amusement. Squirrel feeders come in a range of styles, from feeder boxes to springing cables. Feeder boxes mount to a post or tree, and have a platform for squirrels to sit and a lid that lifts for them to reach seed. These feeders are designed to hold peanuts in the shell or other large seed. Other feeders are designed to accommodate entire corn cobs, by supporting them on a stake or placing them in a sleeve-type holder. This form of feeder can range from a basic post mount shape to a whimsical chair, picnic table, carousel, or even on a string to watch the critters bounce. Keeping these animals occupied away from your bird feeders offers another way to enjoy nature.
