Avian enthusiasts erect martin housing every year, in hopes of becoming a successful landlord. Ensuring that the home you choose meets both the martins' needs and your own can make your colony successful, for a rewarding hobby for years to come. As a colony bird which prefers to roost near humans, martin houses are most successful when pole mounted 10' to 20' high, in an open area at least 30' from human housing. Lighter colored homes attract the birds best, and are excellent at keeping nestlings cool in the summer. The minimum suggested compartment size is 6" x 6" x 6", while larger ones offer better protection from predators. Entry holes sized 1.75" to 2.25" in diameter allow the martins passage and attract them best.

Part of being a successful landlord is monitoring the nests, which requires access to the housing. You will want to ensure the house you choose is easily accessible for you. This is often accomplished with a telescoping pole, lanyard system, or winch system. Not only does the size need to be right for martins, it also needs meet your needs as a landlord, and you will want to determine if the home requires assembly. Optional features such as predator guards, top perches, and door stops may also help determine the home you purchase.
