Fall Planting

As daylight hours dwindle and leaves begin to change hue, many gardeners put their tools away, feeling that planting time is coming to an end. However, the fall months are an excellent time to plant; particularly in the temperate zones. Fall, in this case, does not refer to particular set of calendar days, but rather the six weeks before the first hard frost in your area. This means from September until the beginning of November for most of us. Planting at this time of year can be beneficial for both you and your plants.

The same plants that were in your nursery in the spring are now bigger and healthier than they were before (provided you purchase from a quality grower), but often at a much discounted price. Keep in mind that you didn�t have to water them all summer either. These larger, value priced plants will have the time to get better established before next spring, when they will really show their difference. Most gardeners recognize that bulbs are planted in the fall for the best results the following spring. Some of the same concepts apply to larger trees and shrubs.

One of the many advantages to planting in the fall is that it offers plants time to establish a strong root system. During the cooler months, perennial plants photosynthesize less, so they can focus more energy on growing their roots. As your garden soil remains warm, it is easy to till and prepare for planting, and can be amended as needed. This warm soil, combined with cool air temperatures, retains water wonderfully, for perfectly hydrated trees and shrubs. In other words, you will likely not be watering every other day. Insect and fungal pests generally do not thrive in the fall, reducing the need for any pesticides or fungicides; again, offering your plants better chance for a first rate spring. Perhaps the best part of planting in the fall is that caring for plants now means you can enjoy them more next year with less work.

Planting in the fall not only allows for fantastic perennials the following year, it can also offer some time to enjoy your labors.
