Going Green for Christmas
As the holiday season approaches this year, it ushers in thoughts of adorning the house with lights and sharing time with friends and family. The love and caring we show for others at this time can be echoed by caring for our environment in the same way. Great ways to reduce our environmental impact this holiday season are by using new and different types of outdoor decorations, and by offering environmentally friendly gifts.
One of the favorite sights of the holiday season is the lights strewn around houses. A great way to reduce your electric bill and energy consumption is by replacing standard bulbs with light emitting diodes (LEDs). Many manufacturers are now creating strands of LEDs, rather than conventional white or colored bulbs. These diodes emit more light than a bulb, and use considerably less energy, while lasting longer than standard bulbs. Another lighting option is to use solar lights for some of your adornments. If you live in an area which gets plenty of sunshine in the winter months, using solar lighting will help diminish your electric use and can create bold accents in strategic parts of your garden. We carry a wide selection of outdoor LEDs and solar lights to highlight your seasonal decorations or landscaping.
Recycled products make great gifts for the ecoenthusiast in your family. Bird feeders, bird houses, and bat houses made of recycled plastic are readily available, and help support your local wildlife populations. Most of these products are from recycled milk jugs, which create a sturdy plastic lumber when reused and diminish waste in landfills. Plaques or markers from recycled aluminum also add a personal touch to a home or business, and keep useable metal from becoming trash. Recycled glass feeders are perfect for those who enjoy a bit of shape and sheen in their garden. Repurposing old containers or engine parts can make great planters or yard art as well. Rain barrels capture rainwater and other precipitation, preventing it from going into storm drains for a useable water source for your garden.
For individuals who have everything, planting a tree or shrub in their honor can certainly be a welcome gesture, and a great step towards aiding the environment. Place a dedication marker at the tree or nearby bench to individualize the honor or achievement. A donation in their name to their favorite conservation organization is also a thoughtful gift.
