Research done by the University of Kentucky found that bluebirds readily use a shallow home with a slot entry, both of which discourage sparrows from nesting. A 4" long and 0.75" tall slot on each home acts as an entry, and the overhang of each roof keeps the interior dry. Gaps below the roof line provide ventilation, and a 1.75" thick block of wood sits inside each cavity. This forms a shallow nesting area, deep enough for bluebirds but unpleasant for sparrows. Affix these homes to a wall, fence, or post using the included mounting tab and screw, and open the front panel upward for periodic nest checks. For a different look, place a mounting bracket (not included) on one home's base to pole mount it.
