Controlling Nuisance Wildlife
Fall has returned again! For some, this heralds changing leaves and the beginning of a festive season. For others, however, it may bring some unwanted visitors into the house. As the weather cools, animals such as squirrels, rats, raccoons, and opossums may begin to search for warmer lodgings, finding your crawlspace or attic a perfect hideaway. Autumn also brings a rise in the flea population, which for pet owners means fleas into the house. The days of chalking nuisance wildlife up as facts of the season are numbered, however, as there are an abundance of control items now available. We'll review these items that can help keep your home free of nuisance wildlife safely and effectively.
Squirrels, raccoons, and opossums are often a flurry of activity during the fall months, busily fattening themselves and hoarding food for the winter, when food is scarce. This is also the time when such creatures begin to search for a warm nest. Favorite roosting spots for nuisance wildlife are attics, chimneys, crawlspaces, basements, and within the walls for smaller animals. Mice, squirrels, and rats tend to hide within the walls, while opossums and raccoons will frequent the attic, chimney, or crawlspace. Such animals not only can cause substantial damage to your home, but also often carry diseases such as rabies, toxoplasmosis, histoplasmosis, salmonella, raccoon roundworm, and rat-bite fever. Removing these animals from the home protects both the structure of the home and your health. A safe way to remove wildlife is through live, humane traps. Placing these traps where your have evidence of wildlife will allow the animal to be safely caught and released back into the wild. Once the animal is caught, you may also contact a local wildlife control office to remove and relocate it. Check out the items below or our complete selection of traps available in our Pest Control Department under Wildlife.
Insects can also become a large problem in the autumn months. September and October are usually when fleas tend to lay the most eggs, leading to an infestation in a short amount of time. Adult fleas use domestic pets as a host, which are often only 5% of an infestation. The flea eggs, larvae, and pupa which hide in dark spaces and soft surfaces, such as cushions and carpet fibers, can create an infestation quickly. Controlling these insects begins with treating the pet, but often extends into thoroughly cleaning and treating the home as well. You may wish to try an insecticidal spray or fog, or by placing flea traps throughout the house. Check out the items below as well as our complete line of flea control products available in our Pest Control Department under Fleas, Ticks & Lice.
