The metal mesh body is specifically designed to hold thistle seed, its small openings keeping it available for finches. Birds can cling onto the metal, mesh body and reach the 1.3 quarts of seed, or can rest on the perch ring at the center of the unit. A base tray provides even more feeding spots, and drainage holes on this platform help seed stay dry. A seed baffle within the tray directs feed toward the edges of the tube, and another in the center of the unit distributes the thistle, so birds can feed throughout the piece. The black topper not only covers this reservoir; it also houses a white LED and a solar panel. Situate this feeder in full sun during the day, and when the switch is in the ON position, the LED will illuminate at night and be visible through the open windows of this cap.
