Cavity nesting ducks are often dependent upon manmade housing for their roost, as they cannot excavate a cavity in trees like other birds. This home offers the perfect shelter for goldeneyes. The slanted roof has a significant overhang to prevent rain from entering the home, while ventilation slots on either side of the roof keep the interior temperature regulated. Angled corners and a recessed bottom at the base of the home offer drainage to the nest, keeping it dry. The 3.25" high, 4.125" wide entrance hole allows only the ducks to enter, and the absence of a perch enables a clear entryway. The deep house and missing perch help prevent predators from reaching the eggs. A ladder underneath the door inside the box aids nestlings in exiting the house when called by the mother, and the included bag of wood chips offers additional insulation and nesting material for the birds. One side panel opens in two sections, one to clean the nest and another for observation, and both close securely with metal latches. The 0.75" thick wood aids in insulating the home, while the light color of the unfinished pine keeps it cool in the summer. This pine will age to a graceful gray color over time and with exposure to the elements, enhancing its natural beauty.
