Research from the University of Kentucky found that bluebirds will readily use a slot entry, while sparrows prefer a round hole. The 4" long and 1.25" high, rectangular entry on this house perfectly meets these needs, while remaining protected from the elements by the overhanging roof. A 1.5" thick wooden block rests inside the home, to decrease the depth of the nest to further deter sparrows. The same research found that bluebirds do not mind a shallow home, although sparrows will leave a nest that is not deep. The open corners at the top of the roof offer ventilation, helping to regulate the internal temperature, and a small gap in each corner of the floor keeps the nest dry. Lift the front panel of this home for nest checks and to adjust the depth if needed. A metal latch keeps the home securely closed, and the rough interior of the item helps nestlings grip it and climb out. The 0.75" thick, eastern white pine construction creates a lasting shelter, and will age beautifully over time. Mount this roost to a pole or post for optimal occupancy chances.
